A civil rights group, CREAP Africa Initiative has strongly condemned the brutal killings of over 200 residents in Yelwata, Benue State, during a deadly overnight attack by armed men on Friday, June 13.
Describing the massacre as “senseless” and “heartbreaking,” the civil society organization called for urgent national security reforms, a state of emergency across conflict zones, and justice for the victims.
“The attack in Yelwata is not just a Benue tragedy—it is a Nigerian emergency,” said Sylvanus Udoenoh, the Executive Director of CREAP Africa Initiative. He added that “No nation can survive when blood flows with such regularity and justice is denied at ease.”
While official reports put the death toll at 59, at the time of writing this news, eyewitness accounts suggest that the number of victims may exceed 200, with dozens still missing and homes completely razed.
