Civic Group Urges Kogi, Other States to Drop Anti-EFCC Suit, Citing Threat to Anti-Corruption Fight

The Kogi State government, along with other states, has been called upon to withdraw their suit challenging the constitutionality of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and two other anti-graft agencies. The Supreme Court has heard the case, marked SC/CV/178/2023, and will announce its verdict at a later date.

In a statement, CREAP Africa Initiative, a civic organization advocating for accountability, warned that success in this suit could seriously weaken Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts. Sylvanus Udoenoh, the group’s Executive Director, stated, “The dismantling of these agencies would only embolden corrupt actors.”

He further questioned the motivations behind the legal move, noting it followed a recent Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy. “We demand that the state governments withdraw this case and reaffirm their commitment to anti-corruption efforts,” Udoenoh urged, calling on Nigerians to resist any action that might undermine accountability structures in the country.
